People with a passion for cooking who are looking for work have been given a 'taste' for a profession in the catering industry.
It brought smiles to their faces when they turned up at the employment 'taster' session at Barking and Dagenham College to learn that they really can turn their passion into a profitable business.
The session included presentations by school cooks, a talk by an entrepreneur running a catering business and a workshop on branding, packaging and legal compliance.
Training courses are being started this week and next — one on how to start your own catering business by turning the first spark of an idea into a sustainable livelihood, the other on working in a school kitchen with a guaranteed interview with a catering company.
"These courses can help you join the thriving food economy," Barking and Dagenham Council's cabinet member for employment Sade Bright said. "What's pleasing is the focus on 'heritage' recipes and how these can be used to create a niche in a competitive landscape."
A 'food enterprise and start-ups' course is on Fridays from October 31 to early December at the college's Technical Skills Academy in Barking. Another is a five-day 'professional cookery' course running November 6 to 11 at the adult college Rush Green campus.
Both include an accredited Food Safety qualification for any role in a professional kitchen.
